Originally, a Blue Moon was defined as the third of four full moons in a single season. More recently, people have defined a Blue Moon as the second of two full moons in a single calendar month.
So, if a full moon occurs early in a longer month – there is a chance for a Blue Moon to appear. It happens every 2-3 years.
Today’s Blue Moon is set to occur at July 31, 2015 – 06:43 am (EDT) for NYC.
When was the last Blue Moon, according to the monthly definition? August 31, 2012.

I saw it this morning before work at it’s 5:55 am descent (it was supposed to be at the fullest at 6:47 am) Very lovely.

It was! I was sitting on the Hudson sharing a bottle of wine with a friend. Caught the moon on the walk home. 🙂
