dievca ran into a situation where a kid (14) was trying to open a cassette tape case to see what was inside. The young lady then asked another young adult (17) what the item was….
A fascinating explanation and discussion of how to open the case, what you did with the cassette, what a “cassette player” looked like, why there was a ribbon in the cassette and how the music was read, ensued. dievca has to say that the 17-year-old did the topic justice. He was impressive when discussing “Old School” technology.

Now dievca understands that the word mixtape means something different in this day and age:
“Check out my Mixtape” and “My Mixtape is Fire” are expressions typically used by amateur rappers to promote their self-released records on social media platforms. On Twitter and in online hip hop communities, both phrases are often said ironically to poke fun at the general overuse of the word “mixtape” by aspiring hip hop artists on the Internet.
But the cassette conversation reminded dievca that she has a load of mixtapes in storage and she cannot seem to get rid of them (heavy emotional attachment). And, yes, she still has a cassette player on her stereo~ Snort!
Do you remember rewinding the tape with your finger? The ribbon getting stuck in the player? Taping a broken ribbon back together? Knowing the playlist by heart?
Hmmm, listening to them might be a Holiday activity for this year….

But that is not physical enough. Half the joy was to hand the mixtape to your beau/friend directly, including a handwritten playlist with doodles and notes. So, dievca found this:

I wonder if the technology will resurrect like vinyl…I do know that CD cases fell apart much quicker than cassette tape cases and that was annoying. XO

Like you I still have my old mix tapes, just can’t seem to give them up. I do still have a cassette player, it’s connected to my computer. But they I do still have my vinyl albums as well.

Awesome! It makes me laugh – how attached we become to old technology through memories. We had to replace a turntable for my Dad, last year. My Mom insists on hearing the Orthodox Easter Mass each year — local church recorded it in the 60’s…now where would we get a copy of that?!?!? 🙂
PS. We did try to do the record copy software — should try it, again. It’s better now.

I have about half of my albums transferred to mp3 files so I can carry them with my on the phone/car. Just something about those pops and clicks with the music. I use a program called Audacity and it has worked well for me. Even though I now have some digitized still don’t want to let go of them…LOL

Thank you for the software suggestion! I’ll look into Audacity. There is a feel and smell to a record album, plus the “notes” are readable (not too small), same thing goes for the weight and feel of cassettes. I never felt that with CD’s or flashdrives….wink!

Listening to a record or cassette is more intimate, you’re more involved with the music. It’s not like just pushing a button.
Don’t forget the posters that would come with some albums. Don’t get that with a CD or download.

i still have my vinyls, one or two mixtapes, and albums on cassette. have a cassette player/recorder…might have a couple of blank cassettes somewhere, too! xx
