Altos dos Moinhos – cheeky graffitiPosted: August 14, 2019
The Altos dos Moinos Lisbon metro stop is on the Blue Line. The station opened to the public in 1988 and is designed by architect Ezequiel Nicolau with the plastic interventions of the painter Julio Pomar.
Using graffiti as an artistic expression, Júlio Pomar honored four figures of Portuguese letters;
Camões, Bocage, Pessoa, and Almada.
The work of a year of drawing resulted in the plastic animation of the station’s walls and an exhibition organized by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation’s Center for Modern Art in 1984 entitled “1 Year of Drawing, 4 Poets in the Lisbon Metropolitan”.
João Castel-Branco Pereira, in his work “Arte-Metropolitano de Lisboa”, describes the emphasis the painter wanted to impress on each poet and the iconography he used; Camões “warrior and gallant, memories of a poetically fictional homeland history, in duels, medieval, etc.
