New York City — formerly a humid continental climate — is now within the humid subtropical climate zone. The city has met the National Climate Assessment’s requirements to classify as humid subtropical for the past five years.
What do those requirements entail?
- Temperatures have averaged above 72 degrees in the summer
- Higher than 27 degrees in the winter.
During the first three months of this year, the average temperature in Central Park was over 42 degrees Fahrenheit, the director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Northeast Regional Climate Center.
Newer climate maps place NYC inside of the subtropical zone and instead of the humid continental warm summer climate zones similar to Pittsburgh and Chicago. This makes sense when you look at vegetation and plant hardiness zone maps. NYC’s native birch and sugar maple trees are NOT flourishing in the heat while plants and trees that have historically thrived in Southeast Asia and South America are loving the weather.
The main culprit is assumed to be climate change. Climate zones around the world are shifting at an alarming rate. dievca expects her steaming concrete jungle to continue to get warmer. Per one study’s estimation, by 2050, the city could be as hot as Alabama. But who knows what will happen after COVID-19.

Couture-esque, her collections are at once glamorous and sculptural… An artist first and foremost, she sees her pieces like talismans, loaded with beauty and channeling strength and self-confidence. Her jewels aren’t just ‘accessories’, they are designed to dress the wearer, placing design and inspired volumes firmly in the spotlight. How are you battling the heat?
It’s called the TRPV1 receptor. So when you eat or drink something hot, these receptors get that heat signal, and that tells the nerve to let the brain know what’s going on. When the brain gets the message “It’s hot in here,” it turns on the mechanism we have to cool ourselves off: sweating.
dievca has exchanged recipes with friends and family during the COVID-19 quarantine and this is a recipe she tried and enjoyed: Cajun Shrimp Pasta
Warning – dievca didn’t have any Cajun Spice mix so she made the offering from the same blog (recipe below)
It’s got a serious kick.
And her cooling system works efficiently. Hello, sweaty upper lip!
Maybe this is something for Temperature Play?!?!?
- 1 tablespoon kosher salt
- 8 ounces penne pasta
- 1 pound raw shrimp deveined, cleaned, tail removed
- 2 tablespoons cajun seasoning *see note below
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup parmesan cheese
Add salt to a pot of water and bring to a boil. Cook pasta to al dente doneness. Before draining, scoop out at least 1/2 cup of the cooking water. Drain pasta and set aside.
While the pasta is cooking, cook the shrimp and sauce. Combine shrimp with cajun seasoning and olive oil in a bowl. Toss to combine.
Heat large skillet over medium-high heat. Add butter and melt. Add shrimp in a single layer and cook until golden brown on each side, turning only once. You may have to cook shrimp in two batches to allow enough room. Once done cooking, transfer cooked shrimp to a clean plate and reduce heat to medium-low.
Add heavy cream to pan and scrape bottoms to release any food that is stuck to the bottom. Allow the cream to bubble. Reduce heat to low and stir in parmesan cheese to melt. Add cooked pasta and shrimp and stir to coat. If the sauce needs to be thinned, add pasta water, one tablespoon at a time until desired consistency is achieved.
Cajun Spices (if needed)
- 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
- 2 teaspoons garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
- 2 teaspoons onion salt
- 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
Combine all spices in a small bowl. Use as a dry rub on poultry, beef, shrimp, etc. You can also add to sauces and soups. Store in an airtight container.
Makes 1/4 cup
Equal portions of onion powder and kosher salt can be used in place of onion salt

Have you gained anything positive from the Quarantine?
We know the bad news:
People have died. People have been very ill, lost jobs, been furloughed.
Businesses closed, economies collapsing.
Has anything positive happened?
CO2 emissions dropped.
Wildlife came back to heavily used and populated spaces. One can hear the birds chirping at 4:30 am in NYC.
Some businesses which were on the verge of collapse received a reprieve with Federal Aid or were able to file for bankruptcy in a less messy manner.
In NYC, Animal Shelters had most of their animals adopted.
Some Family and Friends grew closer than they ever expected.

Yes, there are age issues and lurking injuries that won’t disappear, but their impact has lessened – immensely.

Four cups of strong coffee a day might be the recipe for a healthy heart, especially for older adults.
That amount may vary from person to person – but it seems to be a good solid number. Also, note that though caffeine is the first thing that comes to mind when you think about coffee, it also contains antioxidants and other active substances that may reduce internal inflammation and protect against disease.
The following focuses on caffeine intake – about 250 – 350 mg a day.
A team of German researchers, led by the molecular biologists Judith Haendeler and Joachim Altschmied, thinks it has discovered clues about how coffee works its caffeine-fueled magic on our heart health and how much caffeine we should drink each day to see the best benefits.
By studying caffeinated lab mice and dosing human tissues with caffeine, the researchers discovered how a jolt of the stimulant could improve the way cells inside our blood vessels work — essentially, by making certain proteins inside older adult cells perform more like young and nimble ones. The study was published Thursday in the journal PLOS Biology.
“When you drink four to five cups of espresso,” Altschmied told Business Insider, “that seems to improve the function of the powerhouses of our cells, and therefore seems to be protective.”
Scientists have for years noticed that people who drink coffee seem to be less likely to die from all sorts of causes, including heart disease, stroke, or diabetes. Perhaps the best evidence yet for this comes from two massive studies: one of more than 400,000 people in the US by the National Institutes of Health, and another of more than 500,000 Europeans. Both studies found that regular coffee drinkers were less likely to die from any cause than people who don’t sip a daily brew.
Coffee is also associated with a whole host of other health benefits, including a lower risk of liver disease (cirrhosis), a lower risk of developing certain kinds of cancer, lower rates of dementia and Alzheimer’s, and a reduced risk of depression. It’s also great for your heart — people who drink three or four cups a day may be 19% less likely to die from cardiovascular disease.
Altschmied said he hoped his new study would debunk the old advice that people with heart problems shouldn’t drink coffee, and he argues that drinking the equivalent of about four shots of espresso a day could help reduce the risk of heart attacks, especially for people who are obese or prediabetic.
“It will not replace other things,” he said. “Keep on doing your sports, eat healthily, and add coffee to your diet.”
If you don’t like the taste, green tea has similar levels of caffeine and could also be an effective way to boost heart health.
It’s important not to overdo it with the new recommendation, as too much coffee can quicken your heartbeat and cause other health problems. But drinking up to six cups a day should be OK, cardiologists say, and may even reduce arrhythmias in people with irregular heartbeats.
One caveat: The study wasn’t done in humans — only in human tissues and lab mice. What works in a hyper-controlled environment of mice, dosed with very specific amounts of caffeine, may not be the same as what happens when you drink a cup of joe at home.
“If I had four cups of espresso and you had four cups of espresso, we cannot guarantee that we reach the same level in the blood,” Altschmied said.
He also offers a word of caution: Because caffeine can make blood vessels grow, providing more oxygen to fuel tumors, the coffee-drinking advice might not hold for people who have cancer.
“Where people have a diagnosed tumor, we would say better take your hands off the coffee,” Altschmied said. “But if you’re otherwise healthy, it will not harm you, and it might help your heart and circulatory system stay better functional for a longer time.”

Happy 4th of July!

Enjoy your Day!!
When dievca lived in Europe she stopped to see friends who were packing to move to Switzerland. The wife, who was Irish, offered dievca a glass of wine and was about to pour it into a plastic cup – they were packing to move. The husband, who was French, went meltdown and dug through the kitchen boxes to find the proper wine glasses. Ever since then, dievca has tried to offer the proper glass for a specific drink type. she won’t drink out of the can. But, on the other hand, she has broken beer and wine glasses on the rooftop. It is a mess.
Having a wine outside by the pool or on the rooftop may be the Highlight of this COVID-19 Summer.
Meeting friends for a 2-meter spacing dinner in a park calls for easy to carry, easy to eat food and accouterments.
Breaking a wine glass and having to clean it up – would just add to the 6 feet spacing stress.
dievca found some silicone wine glasses at Walmart.com, $11.99 for four. she bought Master a set, too.
Unbreakable Outdoor Rubber Wine Cups: 14 oz, Clear Silicone. 100% Dishwasher Safe, Shatterproof, can for easy carrying or storage. Solid grip, stable on the table. Replaces the one-use plastic.
she does wonder what Marius would say about the silicone….

dievca had the unexpected pleasure of looking out of her window to see two Macy’s barges offering a personal Fireworks display. she and Master had a conversation about the fireworks just that afternoon – Master thought they would cancel it all. dievca thought that the fireworks needed to be used and wasn’t sure of a solution.
Apparently, the Macy’s barges will be offering fireworks around the city along the Hudson and East Rivers (Harlem River?) in smaller and more personal displays. An absolutely lovely and elegant solution for limiting the crowds, yet still bringing Joy to NYC.

Valerie Stunning wants a better Las Vegas—one that’s intersectional and filled with plenty of ice cream. But not just any ice cream. Bougie ice cream. Indulgent ice cream. Adult ice cream.
Stunning founded Paradise City Creamery last May, combining her knack for gourmet, plant-based ice cream with another of her passions: advocating for sex workers.
For years, the “Head Creamstress,” stripper, writer, activist and former burlesque dancer made artisan ice cream as a hobby and for her friends. Eventually she realized it was tasty enough to sell to the 18+ masses.
Last summer Paradise City Creamery ran a monthly pop-up inside Downtown’s Jammyland Cocktail Bar & Reggae Kitchen and also had a booth at Life Is Beautiful. On January 17, Stunning will celebrate a new residency at Artifice (along with a new winter menu featuring four new flavors), which will continue every third Friday through 2020.
Just don’t expect your average trip to Baskin-Robbins. There’s a peepshow-inspired photo booth, plus lots of gold and neon, and each flavor (starting at $12) comes decked out with its own signature toppings, like dripping, dazzling disco cherries. And there’s a sexy story to accompany each cone.
“Our yuzu-wasabi [flavor] is inspired by shopping for a sex toy,” Stunning says. And the espresso chip flavor is “inspired by my work as a day-shift stripper—how I would be in New York drinking my coffee on the subway with a full face of makeup while everyone’s wearing their suit and tie.”
It’s a tongue-and-cheek way of bringing two seemingly opposite worlds together, breaking the ice around conversations about sex and sex work in a fun and delicious way. “These stories tie in everything and cater to that no-shame, no-guilt celebration,” Stunning says.
With sexy-meets-glam marketing, Stunning has already made a name for Paradise City Creamery on social media, and with her motivational, no-holds-barred writing (she’s written for Hustler, and she blogs at valeriestunning.com). She’s a cheerleader for her community, and hopes her playful, gourmet ice cream can get folks to see a bigger picture.
Stunning explains that part of Paradise Creamery’s goal “is to create visibility and promote intersectionality”—a theory and way of looking at discrimination through multiple avenues that often include race, class and gender. “This is the world I come from. Community organizing is what I will always be about, and so to have this platform gives me an entryway to another type of person who may not have considered these issues before.”
Most importantly, Stunning says she wants people who are typically excluded to feel welcome. “Everything is constantly catered to straight, white, f*cking middle-aged people,” Stunning says. “I feel like, if I’m able to hire people that I want to celebrate and represent who I identify as, it really contributes to this conversation about visibility.”
She’s quick to add that Paradise City Creamery’s ice cream game is serious, too. A one-day-only white cacao and truffle ice cream was featured at Picnic in the Alley in October, and her Mezcal vanilla bean and balsamic caramel flavors will also be out on the 17th.
“I really strive for this balance between the strong messaging behind the brand, but also, we’re not f*cking around culinary-wise,” Stunning says. “We’re using really high-end ingredients.Everything we do is top-notch and bougie.”
