dievca is raiding her closet for a quick CA getaway in February. she will be two blocks from the beach, but she figures the temperature is going to be cooler – so she’s looking at swimsuits with options of cover. Her Else two piece is very flattering and the Dries van Noten Pareo is a large wrap. The Alberta Ferretti Swimsuit and Cashmere sweater can cut the chill. Looking at options!
Cleaning the closet for Master: “The Basics Ma’am, just the Basics”

she just went through Master’s Closet this past Monday, 2023.
The sorting/clear out is not an annual activity, but every two to three years.
The process consists of emptying everything out of the closet and drawers. Taking a good look at each piece and sorting into a keep pile, repair pile, rag pile and Goodwill pile. Master loves to get rid of items. Then there is the painful process of buying replacement items either online or in person.
dievca steps in with the second part of the process because Master tends to avoid shopping for replacement items. But if you have tossed 3 faded/stained black t-shirts that you wear on repeat – you will need to replace them.
So, a large Nordstrom’s credit dictated the shopping destination for this year. Instead of Barneys and Banana Republic t-shirts, Master will be trying Vince, Rag & Bone and Frame Denim. Apparently, dievca will be watching a fashion show of “the basics” the next time they meet.

Does this dress work as Cocktail Attire?
Cocktail attire is meant to bridge the gap between day and night. It is still an occasion to dress up, but a full-length gown is not necessary. This merges the silhouette of a garden party dress (shorter) with the fabric and embellishments of a formal gown. Think somewhere between a sophisticated formal occasion and office or party wear.
Still, with so much ambiguity, cocktail attire could mean different things depending on the venue, the time of day, and the season.
During the day, think natural colors and fresh styles and in the evening, feel free to utilize darker hues and embellishments such as sequins or feathers (so long as your dress doesn’t sweep the floor). The goal is to look polished and dressy – but not takeaway from the event
Ladies: When in doubt, a LBD, a pair of sensible heels or dressy flats, some nice earrings, and a classy clutch will always work for a cocktail event, no matter the venue or time of day. In addition to a traditional cocktail dress, women can also wear dressy suits or nice jumpsuits paired with heels or formal flats.
Gentlemen: a suit and tie are required for cocktail attire. Go with darker hues in chillier months or for evening events, but feel free to wear lighter grays or blues in warmer weather or for daytime celebrations. As for shoes, keep it classy with a nice pair of dark dress shoes that match your belt.
OK – now dievca’s dilemma — does she wear the Retrofete Grace Dress in Chocolate (above photo) or not? It’s a quieter color, but completely covered in sequins….
- The venue is a smaller Event Space.
- A Mixed Audience.
- The dress fits very well.
- It’s in the middle of March – Weather could be cold or warm…
Here’s plan: dievca will be trying on the dress with ACNE STUDIOS snakeskin sandals if its warm and carry the brown JALDA croc clutch (her’s is darker than the photo)
If its cold or dievca’s legs look scary without sun… Sheer Nude or Brown stockings with Brown Heels or OTK Brown Boots.

dievca has a Navy Blue Silk Dress that makes her feel amazing. Its’s not the most expensive dress nor the most fashionable, but she likes to wear it whenever she needs to clean up and present to humans. she can dress the outfit up or down with shoes/boots and accessories – any way it goes on it – she feels great.
dievca stands taller.
A lot of people argue that what you wear isn’t important, or that it is unfair to suggest that people should buy clothes to boost their self-esteem. If we are being realistic about the working world or IRL, we have to point out the truth: How you present yourself is important. You don’t need to have a closet full of expensive clothes to get ahead, but you will feel a lot better if you have one or two outfits you absolutely love that you can wear whenever you need a pick-me-up.
dievca doesn’t wear the silk dress because it will impress other people — she wears it because it makes her feel ready to take on the world!

When your body changes and you decide that half of the clothes you have kept on-hand are out of your realm of revisiting, it is depressing and frustrating. Add that one foot has grown a size because of breakage, so gorgeous shoes that no longer fit need to be weeded out.
You push yourself to rip through the closets and try-on EVERYTHING….
1st you sell to Buffalo Exchange and Crossroads (made $200) – the “better” load goes to The RealReal (photo of boxes for pick-up). High-end pieces to Vestiaire Collective or Decades. Leftovers and rags to Goodwill – and you find a place for those good condition bras at freethegirls.org. Who knows if they actually use the bras, but you are able to pack and send then out of your apartment – rather than looking at them in disgust because they are excellent quality and you cannot figure out what to do with them.
Release!
The closet now holds clothing you can wear IMMEDIATELY and pieces that you could wear in a pinch, shoes that don’t take 10 minutes to get on because of the foot issue.
And a few pieces you couldn’t let go of~

In a Panic…

Even after the never-ending process of reducing her closet – she has a number of items available to wear – IF THEY FIT WELL. Health and movement-wise, dievca is in pretty good shape. Deep sleep (physical recovery sleep) and perimenopause-wise, her body shape has shifted – a belly has appeared. Her closet hasn’t shifted to keep up with it because she wants to see what happens with menopause and HRT.
God, what to wear without looking pregnant.

There is an overlap between style and fashion, but a good rule of thumb is that style relates to the individual, while fashion is more collective.
Why is dievca pondering this difference?
she wants to determine the ratio of classic clothing vs. fads she needs in her closet to look unique.
she doesn’t want a uniform, but she doesn’t want too keep ten million pieces, either.
The Marie Kondo credo doesn’t make dievca feel comfortable – but the ’30 use’ rule seems to apply better.
Will you use an item approximately 30 times in your Life? If yes, keep it.
Is that enough to create dievca’s style using Whering? Probably.

And then Spring/Summer arrived…and dievca went into overdrive to refresh her closets. She bought 14 items and was thinking about the rest:
Is she going to keep it all? dievca is not sure – she has her receipts, but she got rid of 10 + items from her closet and is promising you all that she will remove 5 more, before she keeps anything.
Please note that she was holding on to Spring/Summer Clothes which were 7+ years old….a clear out and revamp was needed.

Emergency Closet Rip Apart…(when your closet doesn’t fail you)

It all started with a panic attack for the last Gala of the year. The dress dievca wanted to wear, a multicolored silk jersey Etro, wasn’t found (and she still hasn’t found the damn dress….not happy).
After an irritated meltdown moment and two Alice + Olivia dresses being banished to the resale bag — dievca came up with an alternative of a Lanvin Silk Dress (Ete 2006) and black Charles Jourdan Heels, dressed down with brass accents:
Next panic attack — forgotten dinner for a High School Graduate. Fastest way to get there after work is on a bike, weather was “iffy”. Hot during the day and cooling off at night.
dievca’s Humanoid silk Ellen dress (2013) came to the rescue with the same brass jewelry (Hey, it was already together, in a bag, and easy to grab). J Crew Navy blue ribbed cashmere sweater for the cool restaurant, Barneys Sandals and Liebeskind Navy Leather Backpack for the ride…whew!
