Mamma Mia! via Trompe-l’œil

Trompe-l’œil is an artistic term for the highly realistic optical illusion of three-dimensional space and objects on a two-dimensional surface.

These Rag & Bone “jeans” are part of the Miramar Collection of sweatpants (cotton terry/elastic waist) which are printed to look like jeans.

dievca has fooled many a friend with her two versions of the pants: gathered ankle and straight leg. she would like to upgrade to the Mia cut.

What do you think?

Is dievca cheating by wearing terry cloth “jeans” or just being smart and comfortable?

18+ years to an upgrade…

Nap on Sofa Jenn LebowWhen dievca moved to NYC she bought furniture at IKEA because she has a storage load of Antiques in the Midwest and she wasn’t sure if she was going to stay….  The sofabed was an IKEA floor model that was on sale because it was discontinued, so around year 10 dievca had to get a new sofa cover made in Australia…

Why did dievca keep the sofabed?  The pull-out bed was very very very comfortable – the sofa itself was not (she knows – she’s crazy) ?!?!?!?!?

dievca was looking for an upgrade and she found a sofabed she liked in a Hotel Suite on Roosevelt Island, but it was too heavy to lift so she couldn’t figure out the maker. she asked the Hotel Design Team but they never responded to her email…..  So, when a neighbor wanted to upgrade to a larger sofa after 6 months, dievca hopped on to the purchase of their sofabed (great condition and it fits into her decor).

It was amazing — a building worker got her sofabed out and the larger newer one into the apartment in 45 minutes or less.  Aiding and abetting her crazy and impulsive decision!

How did it work out?

The sofa is larger and more comfortable, but she hasn’t slept on the bed yet. (It’s only been two days). Cross fingers 🤞

dievca has a male Puerto Rican friend who absolutely delights in dievca’s hidden aspirations towards being a Sneakerhead… she has gotten stopped on the streets of  NYC with people commenting on her kicks.  Not bad for a 50-ish old school throwback.

The return of Cocktail Attire – dievca’s dilemma

Retrofete Grace Dress in Chocolate.

Does this dress work as Cocktail Attire?

Cocktail attire is meant to bridge the gap between day and night.  It is still an occasion to dress up, but a full-length gown is not necessary. This merges the silhouette of a garden party dress (shorter) with the fabric and embellishments of a formal gown. Think somewhere between a sophisticated formal occasion and office or party wear.

Still, with so much ambiguity, cocktail attire could mean different things depending on the venue, the time of day, and the season.

During the day, think natural colors and fresh styles and in the evening, feel free to utilize darker hues and embellishments such as sequins or feathers (so long as your dress doesn’t sweep the floor).  The goal is to look polished and dressy – but not takeaway from the event

Ladies: When in doubt, a LBD, a pair of sensible heels or dressy flats, some nice earrings, and a classy clutch will always work for a cocktail event, no matter the venue or time of day. In addition to a traditional cocktail dress, women can also wear dressy suits or nice jumpsuits paired with heels or formal flats.

Gentlemen: a suit and tie are required for cocktail attire. Go with darker hues in chillier months or for evening events, but feel free to wear lighter grays or blues in warmer weather or for daytime celebrations. As for shoes, keep it classy with a nice pair of dark dress shoes that match your belt.

OK – now dievca’s dilemma — does she wear the Retrofete Grace Dress in Chocolate (above photo) or not?  It’s a quieter color, but completely covered in sequins….

  • The venue is a smaller Event Space.
  • A Mixed Audience.
  • The dress fits very well.
  • It’s in the middle of March – Weather could be cold or warm…

Here’s  plan: dievca will be trying on the dress with ACNE STUDIOS snakeskin sandals if its warm and carry the brown JALDA croc clutch (her’s is darker than the photo)

Acne Studios Bastion Viper Slingbacks

Jalda Brown Crocodile "original" clutch rounded
If its cold or dievca’s legs look scary without sun… Sheer Nude or Brown stockings with Brown Heels or OTK Brown Boots.

Feeling Basic ~ Lingerie (repost)

2022- What dievca is wearing for Master today.
Its snowing and will be the start of the Nor’easter,
so dievca needs something to go under the snowpants, again…
The difference is we are having soup and sandwich rather than crepes.

The New Comfort: Who does it best? (Chantelle, Knix, EBY)

Back in the Day (November 17, 2013 to be exact) dievca found Lingerie Comfort with Hanky Panky – In the 8 years since – the rubber has pulled out of the lace, there are holes and many pieces of dievca’s Hanky Panky have been retired.  she hasn’t bought anymore and she’s glad that she didn’t because she’s moved on to a set of Chantelle SoftStretch in Leopard Print ($54/$20):

20211123_130603

A new level of comfort has been found!
A new “go to” brand for the 3 C’s: Color, Comfort and Curves!

That said, dievca bought three additional sets of comfort underwear- one from Chantelle in Forest Green ($58/$20), one from EBY (Empowered By You – a “do good” business) – in Blue Meadow ($48/$22)  and a final set from the Canadian Brand “Knix” LuxeLift in an Anna Sui collaboration pattern ModFloral ($50/$25):

20211123_130449

Here’s the ranking:

  1. CHANTELLE – The SuperSoft fabric is….super soft, yet the bra’s hold up the girls well.  The bra padding is not removable, but it isn’t too overwhelming either – no strange shapes.  The fabric is very smooth and very comfortable.
  2. KNIX – The knix set starts out awkward to put on, but then molds nicely to the body. dievca wore the set with the removable bra pads inserted, she’ll try the top without them next time.  The bra pads looked fine, they did add a little bit of extra when dievca does not need it. There were a couple of seamed rubbing “hotspots” that disappeared as the day went on.
  3. EBY – The EBY set was easy to put on, but the cut of the bra armholes is high.  That is where the seams on the sides of the bra rubbed dievca, all day – she had to keep adjusting the irritation point. Was it horrible? No – just there.  Maybe it will disappear with washing.  The bra cups are removable and in dievca’s case not necessary – but they didn’t look strange. she will try wihtout the pads on the next round – maybe that will stop the rubbing.  The bottoms were very comfortable.

Conclustion – all three (four sets) are nice, but the little bit extra you pay for the CHANTELLE set(s) is worth it.

Back to normal irritations and solutions~

Jennifer Anniston Friends Runny NoseLooks like Life is getting back to normal when people are  dealing with the common cold, rather than COVID-19.

Master flew back with a stuffed up nose. He had been hanging out with some super fun Tots on Halloween. They shared their daycare wealth~

Before His return and across the country, dievca’s nose started to leak. she’s drinking as many fluids as she can get down her gullet.

It looks like dievca will be making soup for everyone. Chicken Soup for herself and  Jambalaya (Creole) for Master. He’s better at drinking water than dievca, so He can do a “thicker” soup.

Creole Jambalaya is less thick than Cajun Jambalaya because of less browning and added tomatoes.

gallery-1498148310-delish-easy-homemade-jambalaya-vertical-1024INGREDIENTS
1 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil
1 onion, chopped
2 bell peppers, chopped
Kosher salt
Freshly ground black pepper
1 lb. boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut 1″ pieces
1 tsp. dried oregano
6 oz. andouille sausage, sliced
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 tbsp. tomato paste
2 c. chicken broth
1 (15-oz.) can crushed tomatoes
1 c. long grain rice
2 tsp. Old Bay seasoning (modify to your heart’s content – dievca has Old Bay handy)
1 lb. frozen seafood or shrimp (or 1 lb fresh shrimp)
2 green onions, thinly sliced

DIRECTIONS
In a large pot over medium heat, heat oil. Add onion and bell peppers and season with salt and pepper.
Cook until soft, about 5 minutes, then stir in chicken and season with salt, pepper, and oregano. Cook until the chicken is golden, about 5 minutes, then stir in andouille sausage, garlic, and tomato paste and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute more.

Add chicken broth, frozen seafood/shrimp, crushed tomatoes, rice, and Old Bay. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover with a tight-fitting lid, and cook until the rice is tender and the liquid is almost absorbed for about 20 minutes.

(If you have fresh uncooked shrimp – add the shrimp and cook until pink, 3 to 5 minutes.)
Stir in green onions just before serving. Serve with crusty bread.

the ride home

Yes, its ridiculous in the realm of Life and Life’s current challenges – but – dievca finally feels like she has mastered a comfortable & clean look for traveling. A personal success.

Tried and True – Cosy Coffee

Good Morning!

Fade Into You – where do you go?

Where do you go when the World gets a little crazy?
What habits, activities, processes happen?
dievca is still working, but when she has a chunk of open time after wiping down the refrigerator….three things may occur:

    1. The vintage 1990’s Champion Sweats appear, cosy and worn in
    2. Alexa plays Classic Cassette Era Rock, 1970’s Pop, 1980’s New Wave, 1990’s Alternative
    3. dievca’s nose gets stuck in a Sci-Fi / Fantasy novel

Master just laughs at His dievca when she hides from the World – He knows she’ll come back to Reality with Him.

But Master isn’t here and dievca has slipped into her 90’s Alternative Universe with Mazzy Star.  Yes, she has her Champion Reverseweave Sweatshirt on:

What do you do to slip away?

Mazzy Star – Fade Into You – 10/2/1994 – Shoreline Amphitheatre (Official)

Fade Into You
Mazzy Star
I wanna hold the hand inside you
I wanna take the breath that’s true
I look to you and I see nothing
I look to you to see the truth
You live your life, you go in shadow
You’ll come upon and you’ll go black
Some kind of night into your darkness
Close your eyes with what’s not there
Fade into you
Strange you never knew
Fade into you
I think it’s strange you never knew
The strange light comes on slowly
A stranger’s heart is out of home
You put your hands into your head
And your smiles cover your heart

Cold Weather Comfort in the City

Sometimes you walk the City in complete wonder. Viewing the Empire State building on a clear Sunday morning after a messy weather Saturday night. (Zoom on the photo, its lovely)

Then you head to a grocery store for items to make a Ham Bone and Potato Soup using the Christmas Hambone.

The recipe turns out to be a keeper.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 ham bone, with visible meat
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 4 cups water
  • 12 teaspoon celery seeds or 1 stalk celery, chopped
  • 12 teaspoon white pepper
  • 12 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 5 medium red potatoes, cut in 1-inch cubes
  • 12 cup butter
  • 12 cup flour
  • 1-pint half-and-half

DIRECTIONS

  • Place the first 6 ingredients in a Dutch Oven, bring to a boil over medium heat, and simmer for 30 minutes or until meat easily comes off the bone with a fork. Shred ham from the bone, discard any fat, return meat to the pot. Add diced potatoes, bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer until potatoes are tender.
  • While potatoes are cooking, in a medium saucepan, melt butter over medium heat being careful not to brown. Add flour, stirring constantly until incorporated well. Bring heat to medium/high and gradually stir in the Half n Half until creamy, thick and bubbly, stirring constantly, being careful not to scorch. Once it thickly coats the spoon, remove from heat.
  • When the potatoes are tender, stir the sauce mixture into the potato pot over medium heat, stirring constantly. Let simmer until soup reaches the desired consistency. You can add milk to adjust.
  • There has been no salt added to this point. Add salt, pepper, garlic, herbs or seasonings to your taste.
  • dievca added a finely chopped garlic clove and a chicken bouillon cube at the beginning. 3 chopped carrots and cauliflower pieces were added with the potatoes.

a side note – sweet treats

So, dievca’s cousin said she didn’t think the Church had orechovnik (nut roll) available, but another cousin said he knew a bakery in Ohio which does mail-order and is quite good.

Note: dievca is the youngest of a SLEW of older cousins with an 8-year gap between her and the nearest in age – you know those Catholics, no birth control. 🙄

Hungarian Apricot Kolaches

dievca ordered a bunch of orechovnik and koláče for her parents and her one brother who is celebrating his birthday. Everything arrived on time and in excellent condition. The koláče went over very well with dievca’s brother and her Mother. Dad prefers his orchnovnik. They froze two extra nut rolls for when dievca arrives in February.

If you read the bakery’s history, it tells about when they decided to focus on one location and online presence – they trimmed their offerings to the most popular items. That ended up being mostly eastern European baked goods.

Apparently a good choice.

Bralette or Bralet? That is the question…. (Lingerie)

bra·lette

/ˈbrälət/
noun
US
an unlined bra without underwires or a clasp.

BRITISH
a tight-fitting crop top with thin straps.

What is the difference between a Bra and a Bralette?

A bralette is an unstructured bra, which means it’s usually unlined, unpadded, and wireless.

Most bralettes consist of the following characteristics: an elastic band, sewn with two fabric (lace, or some other breathable, stretchy material) triangle cups. These cups will often have a dart design to accommodate for the volume of the breast. Since the fabric is stretchier and there is no underwire part, bralettes will respect the shape of your natural breast.

What is the point of a Bralette?

Bralette are more comfortable because of a closer and less structured fitting; you don’t feel constricted while wearing them. They have thin or lacy straps like a regular bra and offer some support to your breast. Bralettes look great under any casual outfit.

Bralette or Bralet?

dievca has seen it spelled both ways, but Bralette seems to be more common spelling and as far as she knows…both versions of the word describe the same type of lingerie top.

Spell & The Gypsy Collection Lingerie — Bralets and Panties.

PS. Is anyone feeling “Spice Girl-ish” after seeing that Union Jack Bralette?
