Something of a smile

paul-newman-joanee-woodward-featured

“He’s very good looking and very sexy and all of those things, but all of that goes out the window and what is finally left is, if you can make somebody laugh … And he sure does keep me laughing” -Joanne Woodward

Paul Newman attributed their relationship success to “some combination of lust and respect and patience.
And determination.”
Paul Newman claimed that “Joanne gave birth to a sexual creature”.  dievca attributes a similar opening up experience to her Master.

“Laughter is the shortest distance between two people.” —Victor Borge

Sexy humor

If I can’t joke around with a guy and hold at least a decent conversation, there is no way sex will ever be on the table.” —Julia

Both genders prefer a partner with a sense of humor, believing that it is important not only in flirting and dating, but also within an enduring relationship. However, whereas men tend to look for a partner who appreciates their sense of humor, women tend to look for a man who makes them laugh. These tendencies are complementary. Indeed, research suggests that when two strangers meet and the man succeeds in making the woman laugh, the chances of her becoming interested in forming a relationship increase (Hall, 2015; Cassata, 2016).

Humor crops up in various forms between Master and His dievca – makes for diversity and is a Joy.

This may not be true for everyone, but

dievca believes in this decription:

New Yorkers may seem like a brash

uncaring bunch to the uninitiated. But

when you get to know the people and the

city, you’ll probably realize that they are

“kind, but not nice,” as opposed to how

many describe people on the West Coast

as “nice, but not kind.”

kindnessDefinitions:

kind

adjective

1
aof a sympathetic or helpful nature was helped by a kind neighbor

They were very kind to us.
bof a forbearing nature GENTLE
kind treatment of animals

carising from or characterized by sympathy or forbearance
a kind act

a kind smile

nice

adjective

nicernicest
1POLITE
a very nice person

That’s nice of you to say.
2PLEASINGAGREEABLE
nice time

a nice person

Kindness is often expressed through actions that you take for other people, while niceness typically involves more superficial words or simple gestures. A nice person may tell a neighbor that they are sorry that they are sick — while a kind person may drop off some soup or offer to pick up groceries for them.

The differences?

  • Nice is self-focused. Kindness is not.
  • Nice is easy. Kindness, at times, is not.
  • Nice is superficial. Kindness is not.
  • Nice doesn’t change much. Kindness does.
  • Nice is a pat on the back. Kindness is a look in the eyes.
  • Nice does not require courage. Kindness does.
  • Nice is forgotten. Kindness is not.

When I was young I used to admire intelligent people; as I grow older, I admire kind people.

– Abraham Joshua Herschel –

dievca doesn’t do very well with “California No” or “Minnesota Nice”, she equates it with being untrustworthy. Master just laughs at her, they have been discussing how being kind seems to become more valued as you age.  Then dievca’s Midwestern background kicks in — “Why can’t people be blunt, honest, nice and kind? XO

Dancing Lingerie with Ginger Rogers

“I enjoy having a fabulous amount of nice lingerie.”
~Ginger Rogers

dievca’s favorite quote from Ginger Rogers:

There’s a verse in the Bible:
‘Those who are barren have more children than those who give birth.’
There are young people all over the world who come to me for advice and love.
I have all the children I can handle.

A little Space Humor, plus Bill Randall

Nothing travels faster than the speed of light, with the possible exception of bad news, which obeys its own set of laws.

Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I’m not sure about the universe.
Albert Einstein

There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened.

Pin-Ups by Bill Randall

dievca is on Champagne this Morning

Apparently the ADA’s came into a Court Room of the NYC Grand Jury and it smelled heavily of wine, so alcohol has been forbidden in the Courthouse – a memo went out~

Yes, dievca did ask the Warden if the Jury could do something afterward. No go~

she will work the morning holding a coffee, do her Jury Duty, have one Prosecco before hopping on the bike to get to work for the second round.

An extra 20 hours a week (that includes the commute) has taken its toll. dievca needs to celebrate the end.

Who better to celebrate with than Talullah Bankhead?

If I had to live my life again, I’d make the same mistakes, only sooner.
Nobody can be exactly like me. Sometimes even I have trouble doing it.
I’m as pure as the driven slush.
The only thing I regret about my past is the length of it..
Only good girls keep diaries. Bad girls don’t have time.
I read Shakespeare and the Bible, and I can shoot dice. That’s what I call a liberal education.
(On seeing a former lover for the first time in years) I thought I told you to wait in the car.
Here’s a rule I recommend: Never practice two vices at once.
I’ll come and make love to you at five o’clock. If I’m late start without me.
And the quote dievca feels strongly about:
I’d rather be strongly wrong than weakly right.

Now let her get that damn 8 year pass for doing Grand Jury Duty….

“As women, we all have certain weaknesses…..” Edith Head (repost)

As women, we all have certain weaknesses.
I know one who can’t resist pretty shoes but has nothing suitable to wear with them.
Others adore frilly lingerie but never have any money to buy outer clothing.

Finding Joy in ALL Places~

“The more joy we have, the more nearly perfect we are. ~ Spinoza”

Photo: dievca NYC 02/2015

“And your very flesh shall be a great poem.”

The point when you come home and my nose nestles into your neck.  The smell of you tickles my senses and brings me immense Joy.  My eyes close, my shoulders relax and you inhale/exhale deeply into my hair. The tension rolls off. Peace.

The flesh may not be perfect, but the nooks, crannies, and scars read like poetry. The epic piece is called You. And the pleasure derived from the re-reading of the work cannot be measured. It is a treasure of Life, of Us.

The quote from Walt Whitman applies in its short form.
In the long form, one us falls short and it’s not you.
But, the sentiments do offer an altruistic way to live life.

This is what you shall do
“This is what you shall do; Love the earth and sun and the animals, despise riches, give alms to every one that asks, stand up for the stupid and crazy, devote your income and labor to others, hate tyrants, argue not concerning God, have patience and indulgence toward the people, take off your hat to nothing known or unknown or to any man or number of men, go freely with powerful uneducated persons and with the young and with the mothers of families, read these leaves in the open air every season of every year of your life, re-examine all you have been told at school or church or in any book, dismiss whatever insults your own soul, and your very flesh shall be a great poem and have the richest fluency not only in its words but in the silent lines of its lips and face and between the lashes of your eyes and in every motion and joint of your body.”

“This is what you shall do…” by Walt Whitman,
from the preface of Leaves of Grass.

Inspired by Iris Apfel: Aging with a Flourish!

iris-apfel-the-bird-of-fashion-s-imagination-316633

The secret of youth from Iris Apfel:

“I think you have to be interested. If you’re not interested, you can’t be interesting.”

“Stay in the company of young people because they know what’s going on…at least they think they do~”

“If you make a mistake in what you put together the Fashion Police are not going to haul you into jail.”

“I think wit and humor are Life.”

“It’s the thrill of the hunt.”

“Remember, if you do your own thing, you have to have a thing to do.”

Master’s take? Her fashion choices are not his preference, but he honors her great collection of costume jewelry. Master appreciates the well-thought process of accessorizing her outfits.
(Her Queens accent is going to kill  him.)

dievca’s take? Iris offers a vision of how to grow older with Joy. Working to present yourself well and keeping you finger in the pie of Life seems to keep one young. Iris not someone to copy, but someone to be inspired by and learn from while blazing your own trail.

Iris — the documentary

ABOUT THE FILM

The latest film from legendary documentarian Albert Maysles (GREY GARDENS, GIMME SHELTER), IRIS pairs the late 88-year-old filmmaker (who passed away on March 5) with Iris Apfel, the quick-witted, flamboyantly dressed 93-year-old style maven who has had an outsized presence on the New York fashion scene for decades. More than a fashion film, the documentary is a story about creativity and how a soaring free spirit continues to inspire. IRIS portrays a singular woman whose enthusiasm for fashion, art and people are life’s sustenance and reminds us that dressing, and indeed life, is nothing but an experiment. Despite the abundance of glamour in her current life, she continues to embrace the values and work ethic established during a middle-class Queens upbringing during the Great Depression. “I feel lucky to be working. If you’re lucky enough to do something you love, everything else follows.”
