Something of use – the “QUICKIE”

You all are probably much more aware than dievca – sometimes she is clueless…

“Your sure are smart, but you sure a dumb.” was a phrase that her Dad used on occasion.  Please don’t think it was meant meanly, it was just social commentary.  dievca was in LaLa Land growing up – a bookworm and science geek. She was “test” smart.  Common sense didn’t arrive until later – and despite dievca’s fierce practical streak, sometimes common sense disappears to this day.

dievca has always vacuumed her hardwood floors, lugging out the vacuum from where she hides it in the deep of a closet.

Her friends stayed in the apartment for two weeks and they find a microfiber sweeper in dievca’s washer/dryer closet.

dievca’s life is transformed.

She knew the previous renters left this flexible static duster:

Flexible static duster

It’s good for ceilings, top of the refrigerator, and that’s about it…(yes, she tried it on the floor – disaster, too flexible)

Because her friends couldn’t find the hidden vacuum, they found SOMETHING of USE!

Quickie Microfiber floor duster mop

dievca felt like an a** because she had no clue she had this available for 2+ years.  It’s making her Life so much easier.  The dust from NYC is easier to collect and the vacuum doesn’t have to make an appearance as frequently. Plus, the microfiber pad washes like a dream and is easier to put on and remove.

Something of Use – the 50/50 Boot at 35 years!

Paper Magazine and Stuart Weitzman 5050 Capsule Collection

Female New Yorkers are boot lovers.  The Men wear boots, too, but the women live in boots for 3 out of 4 seasons.  The Stuart Weitzman 50/50 boot has its place in many a small NYC closet. This versatile style has a forgiving design which allows for large calves to be hugged in comfort.

SOMETHING OF USE ~ dievca has 3 pairs squished in her closet:

The 5050 style launched in 1993, and the legendary over-the-knee boot has long garnered a reputation — and a major celebrity following — for its flawless, comfortable fit and minimalist, sophisticated sensibility. With its distinctive half-and-half construction, featuring a leather or suede front and stretch fabric back, the 5050 continues to live up to the title of “icon” in a world where that word is endlessly overused; it can be paired with any style, any occasion, any genre, any decade.

Like many fashion icons, it only gets better with time. Cut to Fall 2021, Stuart Weitzman debuts a new 5050 Capsule Collection in celebration of its 35th anniversary, featuring new interpretations of this boot, designed to match whatever mood you’re in.

The aptly named 5050 HIGHSHINE dials up the glamour with more than 300 crystal embellishments hand-applied to each pair. Pearl embellishments give the look an ultra-feminine take with the 5050 LIFT PEARL. Silver-tone studs on the 5050 LIFT STUDS offer a punk vibe. The 5050 FRINGE with cascading fringe detail nods to the must-have cowboy boot trend, while the 5050 LIFT WOVEN boot ups the craftsmanship quotient with each pair taking no less than 14 hours to create using handwoven leather (no two are the same). The 5050 LIFT and the 5050 ULTRALIFT boot provide extra height to boost your strut — a 35-mm platform and 50-mm platform, respectively.

dievca is pondering if her closet can hold a fringe pair or the platform…

Looking for a Host/Hostess gift? something of use

dievca is a huge fan of Baggu Bags and has used a couple of them until they actually wore out! She’ll replace them at some point, but as a change of pace – she ran into these recycled taffeta, embroidered totes:

EMROIDERED THANK YOU TOTE

The typical American family uses 1,500 plastic bags every year. But thanks to designer Lauren DiCioccio, you can cut down on waste and look really cool doing it. Her funky embroidered fabric bag was inspired by San Francisco’s 2007 plastic bag ban. She keeps the same cheerful “thank you” messages on each bag, but uses recycled taffeta instead of plastic. Take one out next time you’re shopping or offer one as a gift to pass along the Earth-loving vibes. They (the family/friends or Host/Hostess) can reuse and reduce ‘til it wears out. Made in San Francisco.

Replacing ‘Something of Use’ after 29 years

In a Past Life, dievca received a set of melamine mixing bowls from Crate and Barrel as a gift.

The bowls have been through multiple moves, lived in Europe, have been dropped, washed, held salads and made cookies numerous times.  Like everything else, 29 years of weekly wear has taken a toll.  The pouring spouts are chipped, the rubber holders on the bottom are deteriorating and, yet, dievca is holding on to them.

Why?  The bowl portion itself has not cracked and Melamine is categorized under Class #7 on the list of Plastic Resin Codes. This means that it is a widely used plastic that does not fit into the more commonly used #1-6 classifications and should not be thrown in your recycling bin. Melamine cannot be melted for recycling like other plastics.

The bowls are a modern classic. Created by Danish designers – Rosti in 1954, the Margrethe bowl was produced and named after then Princess Margrethe, the current queen of Denmark. The easy-care melamine mixing bowls have ergonomic handles, pouring spouts and a non-skid ring at the bottom.

dievca looked up the bowls on the Crate and Barrel website and they are still listed for sale.  In fact, they now come with lids – that wasn’t available the first time around. The price? $39.95

The question is….can dievca throw away the still usable bowls and all the memories attached to them.

We’ll see.

Weighted Blankets helping hot flashes? (Something of use)

BreezeLogoGIF

Although other medical conditions can cause them, hot flashes most commonly are due to menopause — the time when menstrual periods become irregular and eventually stop. In fact, hot flashes are the most common symptom of the menopausal transition.

During a hot flash, you might have:

  • A sudden feeling of warmth spreading through your chest, neck and face
  • A flushed appearance with red, blotchy skin
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Perspiration, mostly on your upper body
  • A chilled feeling as the hot flash lets up
  • Feelings of anxiety

The frequency and intensity of hot flashes vary among women. Hot flashes may be mild or so intense that they disrupt daily activities. They can happen at any time of day or night. Nighttime hot flashes (night sweats) may wake you from sleep and can cause long-term sleep disruptions.

Weighted blankets are therapeutic blankets that weigh between 5 to 30 pounds. The pressure from the extra weight mimics a therapeutic technique called deep pressure stimulation.

Deep pressure stimulation uses hands-on pressure to relax the nervous system. Doing so may help:

  • relieve pain
  • lessen anxiety
  • improve mood

Deep pressure stimulation doesn’t have to be completely hands on. With weighted blankets, the same pressure comes from having the blanket wrapped around the body.

dievca learned about weighted blankets from a friend in Europe who is a Therapist – they issue the blankets to their patients. dievca bought one because the color made her happy, it matched her bedding and she thought she would try it while napping~

she didn’t realize that it would became important a part of her strategy to get deep sleep during perimenopause~

Numbers – as a trend, don’t lie.

Though dievca sleeps 7-8 hours a night — according to her watch, she wasn’t going into the “deep sleep” phase  for very long.  she could feel that she needed something more for healing and weight loss. dievca modified her eating/drinking patterns, bed time consistency, showering pattern, etc.  Not working.  The “hot flashes” got her at the end of a sleep cycle throughout the night, every time – and minimal deep sleep (5-10 min a night) occurred only at the beginning of the night.

Enter the weighted blanket….

Add 15 min – 1 hour of deep sleep.

“Hot Flashes” still occur towards morning – but there are less blocks of wake-up time between sleep cycles.

You may be asking – “Doesn’t the weighted blanket make you hotter?”

Bearaby sunbeam-velvet-napperdievca’s Bearaby Velvet Napper has a large weave with “holes” for air flow and she pushes it off as much as any other blanket during a “hot flash”.  You do have to be careful because the blanket is heavy and one can strain a muscle if you don’t pay attention. (Yes, it happened.) But, the time underneath that weighted blanket yields longer and consistent “deep sleep” which is where a body can heal.

Something of use.

Something of Use: Silicone Wine Glasses

Naomi Campbell with 1993 Mick and Bono (the dogs), Jean Pigozzi

When dievca lived in Europe she stopped to see friends who were packing to move to Switzerland.  The wife, who was Irish, offered dievca a glass of wine and was about to pour it into a plastic cup – they were packing to move. The husband, who was French, went meltdown and dug through the kitchen boxes to find the proper wine glasses. Ever since then, dievca has tried to offer the proper glass for a specific drink type. she won’t drink out of the can. But, on the other hand, she has broken beer and wine glasses on the rooftop. It is a mess.

Having a wine outside by the pool or on the rooftop may be the Highlight of this COVID-19 Summer.
Meeting friends for a 2-meter spacing dinner in a park calls for easy to carry, easy to eat food and accouterments.
Breaking a wine glass and having to clean it up – would just add to the 6 feet spacing stress.

dievca found some silicone wine glasses at Walmart.com, $11.99 for four. she bought Master a set, too.

Unbreakable Outdoor Rubber Wine Cups: 14 oz, Clear Silicone. 100% Dishwasher Safe, Shatterproof, can for easy carrying or storage. Solid grip, stable on the table. Replaces the one-use plastic.

she does wonder what Marius would say about the silicone….

Party on! Safely. XO
